From Digital Transformation to Intelligent Organizations: The Next Stage of Industry 5.0

Combining connected technology with human-centricity, resilience and sustainability

Digital transformation is often described as the adoption of new platforms, cloud services or automation. An intelligent organization goes further: it uses information to improve decisions, adapts processes as conditions change and connects technology investment to human and business outcomes. AI can support that transition, but only when integrated into the organization’s operating model.

McKinsey and Stanford HAI research shows that AI adoption is spreading across business functions while many organizations continue to work through the challenge of scaling and measuring impact. The European Commission’s Industry 5.0 framing emphasizes a human-centric, sustainable and resilient approach to industry. Together, these perspectives encourage leaders to evaluate transformation not only by efficiency, but also by its effects on people, continuity and long-term value.

A fragmented process can become a faster fragmented process when automation is applied without redesign. Begin by mapping how work moves between people, systems, suppliers and customers. Identify bottlenecks, duplicated information, unclear decisions and recurring exceptions. Then determine where digital integration or AI assistance can make the process more reliable.

Intelligent operations need clear data ownership, dependable systems, fallback procedures and staff who know what to do when automation is unavailable. AI outputs should be monitored, and critical decisions should have appropriate escalation routes. Supplier dependence and cyber risk should be included in planning, not treated as separate technical concerns.

Industry 5.0 is best treated as a design perspective rather than a technology shopping list. Organizations can combine digital capabilities with human judgment, operational resilience and sustainability by starting with real processes and evaluating the full impact of change. The destination is not simply a more automated business, but a more capable and adaptable one.
